iOS 12.1.4 battery drain

Am I the only one with this issue? Yesterday, or the day before that, I updated my iPhone XR. One thing I've come to notice is that, since I updated it, the battery drains pretty fast. I'd say I'm an average user and I could go the entire day and it wouldn't reach 20%. Now, around 4PM, after being fully charged around 5AM, it's down to 50%. I just find it weird, knowing that I'm an average user, my average screentime is around 2 hours a day, so I don't know what's up.

hi al,

thank you for the tests!

I tried over last night the same but no visible effect on iPhone X.

I was planing (but never did) an iCloud not-sync test in the future.

if I log out from the iCloud, the local Photos will be deleted, not quite comfortable with this.

will take time to bring it back, we will see.

at the end of the day, we need the iCloud sync

thank you!

I agree with keeping the thread open. After horrendous problems with my 6s after the upgrade to 12.1.4 & 2 trips to Apple without resolution (1 hr away), I decided to trade up to the Iphone 7. Upgraded to 12.2, it worked fine for awhile, and now within the past 5 days I've had terrible drainage problems while the phone is sitting next to me unused. All settings have been set to minimize usage. At times it doesn't even charge in the expected time. I've restored, reset, but continue to be disappointed with the battery issues. When I was out of the country recently and turned off cellular, it worked fine. However, since cellular is the main reason for having a cell phone, only turning it off for a number of apps is the only recourse.

Thanks megaschwein, that test is now In progress. Logged out of iCloud completely, reset my 6s (running 12.2!), and logged back in. FYI - when you log back into the iCloud, Apple turns everything on, including backup to the cloud. (Er, maybe not keychain). iOS did leave my Siri settings alone (and off). I had to reboot the phone to get logged back into iTunes/App Store. SO, after getting my phone back to the state it was in, I plugged it in and charged back to 100%. I'll post the result after 32 hours. If that didn't work, I'll be right back to 25% drained.

I had high hopes that turning off Calendar would kill the battery drain, because it did on my iPad. And I just realized that my iPad has no cellular modem. Which rung a bell. Go read this:

Apparently Apple and Qualcomm have kissed and made up now! Maybe the software fix was the problem? And maybe we'll get our battery life back? If Apple doesn't fix this soon, my next phone is going to be a flip phone... Just saying.

I was following a similar thread when someone closed it by saying "put your phone in low power mode". Not Helpful.

Hi, apologies, I‘m not sure if I understood your last post correctly. What I suggested to test is (1) restore your iPhone to factory settings, (2) set it up as a new device and (3) do NOT login to iCloud when asked and (4) do not install any third party apps. I assume that your battery drain will be gone and that you will loose about 10 to 15% in 24 hours while leaving the phone sitting on your desk doing nothing.

When you then later login to iCloud, the battery drain should be noticeably higher.

I‘ll post a few screenshots next weekend.

Logging into icloud will set up a sync regime so it will use power.

You need to see if it flattens the battery in 4 hours as in the theme of the thread. Reducing “standby” from 10 days to 5 tells us the obvious rather than the cause of drain some folk have experienced

its an interesting experiment but off topic.

In reply to megsachwein, you're right, I did't restore to factory settings or set my phone up as a new device. From what I did try, based on the loss of 18% battery life after 18 hours, merely logging out of and back into the iCloud didn't help. I don't think I mentioned this, but I had turned WiFi off and was using 4G when I logged back into the iCloud, and I watched my battery drain from 36% to 32% in about 4 minutes. As far as 3rd party Apps, I have background refresh disabled, and I haven't used any Apps! And since my phone was plugged in for the next 3 hours after logging back into the iCloud, I don't think it had anything to do with any icloud sync regime.

Bottom line for me is, a) I think this is cellular modem related and that only Apple can solve this problem. (But I think they have a iCloud Calendar issues as well). b) If and when Apple fixes this ridiculous battery life issue, we'll never know what it was. c) Unless they solve it soon, I've probably bought my last iPhone. And while I'll never go back to Windows, I'm disgusted with all of the bug ridden updates to macOS as well. And finally, d) Apple needs to add a Not Helpful button to the forums.

Thanks for your inputs and ideas. I found them helpful. Good luck, I'm out of here, and no longer following this thread.

After struggling with a daily major battery drain for two months in spite of utilizing all suggestions to correct the problem, I was thrilled to find that the newest update 12.3.1 made a huge improvement. The battery drop on my IPhone 7 is now very slow allowing me to go almost 24 hr without having to recharge. Total reversal in performance.
