How can one Erase the Time Machine external Hard Drive?

I've migrated from an old iMac to a new one. I keep getting messages that there isn't enough room on the TM hard drive to perform a back-up. I THOUGHT it would just write over the oldest files, like it use to do. But it won't.

I want to Erase this current 4 TB HD but I keep getting a message that it can't be done because the Finder is using it.

I've tried everything that I can think of ...

  1. Pull down the  Apple menu and choose ‘System Preferences’
  2. Go to the Time Machine system preference panel, then scroll down in the drive list to find “Add or Remove Backup Disk” and click that
  3. Select the hard drive, disk, or backup volume that you want to remove from Time Machine backups, then click on “Remove Disk”
  4. Confirm that you want to remove the drive from Time Machine and stop backing up to the disk in question
  5. Exit out of System Preferences when finished.
