Do you have unlock your phone when switching carriers?

Pretty much what’s in the title. Do you really need to unlock your iPhone when switching carriers or can you just switch the SIM card and be good to go?

It depends on the phone you have. Is locked to the carrier you are on now before you change? Call them they can unlock it. If it’s an unlocked phone your are good to go!

Well I’m having a debate with a co-worker. He’s telling me that, that with an iPhone, you don’t have to “unlock” your iPhone when switching carriers. But from what I understand and what the carriers tell you is that you have to unlock your phone when taking your phone to a new carrier. I’m just curious if there’s a special thing with iPhones where this doesn’t apply.
