I used to make use of preview to edit the pdf and Hanzi Pen is the default font I set whenever I edit the pdf. However after I updated the system, there is no longer "Hanzi Pen" font to choose from the markup tool bar. I can still edit the text with this type of font in the pdf I worked on before but the markup tool bar show nothing in the "font type"... Is there anyway that I can restore this type of font in the Preview?

You are not technically editing the PDF with Preview. You are adding an annotation layer to the underlying PDF text content.

You will need to re-install the font into your local Fonts folder (/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts) so operating system updates/upgrades do not remove the font in the future. The font would then need to be activated in Font Book, and then it should be available to Preview's A˅ text markup tool.

In my Font Book, I searched for just the word Hanzi and got two entries for HanziPen SC, and HanziPen TC. Both are OpenType PostScript fonts, that are not installed. However, if you right-click on the HanziPen SC font name, there is a menu item to Download the font. Do that for each Hanzi SC and TC family. You may still need to activate them in Font Book. Then, they should become available to you in Preview when you next launch it.

Apple's Preview is not a PDF Editor.

The font has to be accessible in the application that you were using to create the content of the PDF, in which case, a subset of that font would be included within the PDF when it was created. You cannot add the font after the fact.

Was this font available, and activated in Font book at the time you created the content and the PDF it was based on?
