Shortcuts app does not handle NEF-photos

(Sorry if this is posted into the wrong category or place, I didn’t find Shortcuts app anywhere in the list so chose Photos for iOS instead. Related, though)

With support for Lightroom mobile now in place, I created a workflow in Shortcuts to a) import photos, b) copy the most recent import batch to Lightroom and c) delete the originals. Was thrilled to see it work, with a single push of the button.

However, I noticed something alarming: the photos being imported were JPG & RAW file pairs (namely uncompressed NEF-files for a Fujifilm camera). Only the JPGs made it to Lightroom, the RAW/NEF files were nowhere to be found.

There are no options within Shortcuts app that I can detect for choosing the type of the photos to move.

This leads me to believe that Shortcuts is, in this case, ditching RAW files and not informing the user. I ended up having the original NEFs of ca. 250 photos wiped.

Can anyone verify this, or is it just me? Would love to hear if it’s just the Fujifilm files or any others, or if this is documented elsewhere already.

Replying to myself, I can verify after tests that the problem resides inside the Shortcuts app somehow. When a batch contains JPG/RAW pairs, the script discards (at least the Fujifilm) RAW-files and imports only the JPG-versions to Lightroom. I ran tests with two different cameras, with various settings.

So, the end result is that the Shortcuts app’s Import to Lightroom -script is broken in terms of RAW-files (at least the NEF-files produced by Fujifilm cameras), and combined with delete the imported ones -script leads to data loss.

Do you have a Mac as well? Have the RAW&JPEG pairs been synced to your iPad with iCloud Photos?

On the Mac you could switch between the RAW&JPEG pairs to use the RAW as original. The default is to use the JPEG as the original.

Then you could checked, if your shortcut will work differently, if the pair has been switched. I would only test with one pair.

Yes, I have a Mac and no doubt this would solve the problem. I'll test if the results are the same.

But I'm working dedicatedly on an iPad only workflow, to be able to work on my photos while traveling: If I'd use a Mac at any point of the workflow, the entire Shortcuts script would be rather useless as better solutions exist for MacOS.

However, I don't think that this solves the issue itself: The purpose of the Shortcuts app workflow is to quickly sync Photos and go around the problem of importing the photos and deleting them and so on... This was actually the solution proposed upon the launch of the new iPad Pros, with the limitations of the USB-C not using mass storage.

The real problem is that NEF-files are deleted from RAW/JPG pairs by the Import to Lightroom -script, which is problematic.
