after rebooting my Mac several times, this is what I get on the computer. Sometimes I get a locked symbol asking for a pin. Is there a way I can reset this on my own? It's a fairly old computer and it's very large to bring in.

Sounds like your iCloud account has been compromised and someone used Find My Mac to lock your machine.
Contact Apple's account security team.
You will need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP, I'd suggest an Apple Store. When you do, please bring a proof of purchase.
Going forward use a VERY secure password for your AppleID.
