Scrolling in terminal is completely broken in Mojave 10.14.3 (Bluetooth issue?

I recently bought a 2018 Macbook Pro with the i9 Processor a few months back and its given me nothing but problems. This thing used to take 5 minutes to boot and would just beachball on startup and I couldnt do anything. So I reinstalled Mojave, and its somewhat fixed, it still takes very long to login. Yet thats not the largest problem for me. Whenever I use the Terminal, it completely breaks my wireless mouse, I have to shut it on and off to restore any features of it. And when I do, it reverses the scrolling direction. This is not my mouses fault as it works fine in EVERY other application. I can only scroll in the Terminal with my trackpad. This is such an annoying issue. I shouldn't have to pay 4 thousand dollars to wait 5 minutes to boot, then completely wipe my hard drive to find the app that I use the most completely breaks my accessories. Is there any fix for this? I think its an issue with bluetooth because my headphones randomly lose connection, then reconnect to the macbook and it stops sending audio to my macbook. Again, this SHOULD NOT be an issue with a 4 THOUSAND DOLLAR MACHINE.

<<...the Terminal, it completely breaks my wireless mouse...>>

So it begs the question, what about the trackpad—same experience?

What about a different wireless mouse—same experiences?

More information surrounding the anomaly the better.

Hi, alexchomes !

Logic would seem to dictate if you are having problems at home, and they do not appear at the Apple Store under diagnostics, then the problem is in your environment at home. Have you read the following support article?

Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference

Perhaps there is something contained therein which can be of help.

Good luck !

It works completely fine with the trackpad. Its a logitech mouse, and I know for a fact it is not the problem because I use it with my desktop too. I've had various bluetooth problems with this macbook, ontop of the boot problems. At this point I have no idea what is wrong with my computer. Taking it to the apple store never seems to help because they live and die by their hardware diagnostics test. But this devil of a computer passes it. In an ideal world I would get a replacement, but I doubt that will ever happen. I bought this thing as an investment, and an upgrade over my 2012 13 inch, but even that thing boots faster and has less bugs. I even ran a geekbench on this macbook. (It is supposed to score over 5200 on single core, and 21000 on multicore). I scored a 4300 on single and 19000 on multicore respectively. Which is worse than the base model 15 inch for this year. There has to be something wrong with my laptop. I did not pay almost double price to get the same performance as the base model, and get all these bugs and issues coupled with it. I have been using Apple computers strictly for 15 years and I am at the point that I may never buy another one again.

Otherwise?

Now I am really curious - exactly what compensation are you receiving, and in what amounts? It appears this flies in the face of the EtreCheck privacy policy, which states in part :

Except as set out in this Privacy Policy, we will not disclose, sell, distribute, rent or lease your Personal Information to third parties unless we have your permission or to complete a transaction. We do not share your identifiable Personal Information with third parties for their direct marketing use without your express consent.

So if you are not selling, renting or leasing information, how are you receiving non-financial compensation, and from whom are you receiving it?

Why are you allowed to post spam on these forums when nobody else is?

Exactly what are your financial entanglements - if any - with Apple?

To whom are you selling the data collected from EtreCheck?

That is the standard boilerplate that the Apple moderators require if you post your own link, as dictated in the Apple Support Communities Use Agreement - Apple Community. I assume the “otherwise” refers to something like social media reputation. I don’t have much of that though. I stick to more traditional means of compensation. EtreCheck is free. But it turns out that lots of people run it without any intention of posting a report here in Apple Support Communities. I now have an optional in-app purchase available for people to make the report easier to read and provides a few other tricks. But for basic, no-charge usage, EtreCheck will generate a text report that other people here can read. It will also highlight any major or minor problems it finds. (There is a bit of a story behind that. Old versions of EtreCheck were purely text based and uses a colours for highlighting. But people read way too much into those colours so I changed it to list major and minor problems in literal black and white. Also, the latest iteration of the forum software would have broken those colours anyway.) Finally, the free version of EtreCheck will list adware, malware, or any other security issues it finds and help the user correct them. I don’t really market it as an “antivirus app” due to another long story. But it is quite good at finding zero-day malware that nothing else can find.

I think I mostly covered that above. I don’t peddle in personal information. EtreCheck is very careful about privacy. Reports are designed to be anonymous. And I have very few customers, relatively speaking. I don’t have enough information to sell even if I wanted to. I’m an old school software developer. The app is free. If you like it, you can pay a little bit of money and I’ll give you some extra features.

Why are you allowed to post spam on these forums when nobody else is?

Technically it is not spam. I only post a link to EtreCheck if I think it will help. It is pretty rare that I do that. I think you can confirm that with this link. Technically, I didn’t even post a link here because I screwed up my boilerplate due to the new forum software. You always have to press “enter” to make a link live or use the link control.

Anyone is free to post a similar link to their own software or web site under the same terms. Apple keeps a close eye on those posts and will delete them if they are truly spam or will add a disclaimer and send a nasty-gram to the poster. I’ve received a few nasty-grams over the years, but never for an EtreCheck link. 😉

exactly what are your financial entanglements - if any - with Apple?

I’m a member of the Apple Developer Program, which I pay for. EtreCheck is available in the Mac App Store. Anyone who purchases the “Power User” package in EtreCheck via the Mac App Store actually makes the purchase from Apple, who takes a 30% cut and sends me the rest. Apple provides really good service though. Some developers complain about the 30% but I find it very well-worth the money.

to whom are you selling the data collected from EtreCheck?

As I said above, I sell software, not data. Some people find the software valuable, which I found fairly surprising. I don’t expect that anyone would find the data valuable. And even if someone did want the data, EtreCheck reports are always anonymous. If someone did want the data, it would only be aggregate data about installed software, performance data, system configurations, etc. - never anything personally identifiable.

I have! And it passed everything with flying colors. They told me to leave. This has honestly been a nightmare of an experience.

You said you spent 4 thousand dollars for the machine. How much did you spend for the mouse? The problem may very well be with the mouse, or more specifically, with the mouse software.

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from https://www.etrecheck.com and run it. Create a new reply and use the "Notes" tool below to add your EtreCheck report. Using the link above, you can download EtreCheck from the Mac App Store or download EtreCheckPro directly.

I suggest using EtreCheckPro because it can do a better job of collecting processor utilization due to Mac App Store technical limitations. My guess is that you have some software that is not working well with the new machine. That could explain the mouse problems and the less-than-expected performance.

Disclaimer: EtreCheck is my own app. EtreCheck is free to use but has in-app purchases available. Downloading EtreCheck or using it could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

Why do I have difficulty with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices when USB 3 devices are attached to my computer?

Some USB 3 devices can generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your computer. Here are some tips to avoid this issue:

  • If your USB device has a cable long enough that you can move the device, place it away from your Mac—and make sure not to place it behind your Mac, or near the hinge of its display. The antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are located there, and USB 3 devices placed there might interfere with your wireless connections.

  • If you're using adapters or dongles on a Mac computer with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, plug them into the front port on the left side of your Mac, or into the ports on the right side (if your computer has them). These ports are the farthest away from the antennas, making interference less likely.

  • To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. You can change this on your wireless base station. Bluetooth always uses 2.4GHz, so this alternative isn't available for Bluetooth.
