Every time I try and close down google chrome it reopens. I'd love to uninstall it but I can't as it says it is still open even when I've shut it down. I don't suppose you could help please???

Open Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder and type Google Chrome in the search bar at the top right. Press Return. Then choose it and use the "X" button at the top left to Force Quit Chrome. Then go to your Applications folder and drag it to the Trash and empty.
Thank you for helping so quickly. I did this, but as soon as I clicked on Force Quit it re-opened again. Then it won't let me trash it because it's open.

Restart your Mac. If Chrome opens then it may be because you have it in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Startup Items. Choose it and use the (-) button to delete it. You may have to unlock the lock.
Or it could be that when when you go to Apple menu > Shutdown, Restart, or Logout you have checked "Reopen windows when logging back in".
Boot into Safe Mode, Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac, which disables all 3rd party software and delete the Google files from there.
