Is an antivirus software required for MacBooks

Do MacBooks require an antivirus software? I will be using my MacBook for work and the company had requested I use an antivirus software.

Also what antivirus software is recommended?

Thanks,

Mac computers do require some protection against spontaneous infection by malware. That is why excellent protection is provided by Apple, and built in to your Macintosh. If you needed something more, Apple would include that as well.

DO NOT install third-party cleaners, speeder-uppers, Generic Un-Installers or so-called virus protectors. These waste resources on your Mac by running continuously in the background, and do not provide better protection that the features built into your Mac.

The Mac does not allow arbitrary non-Apple software to run without your specifically authorizing it. You will be presented with a dialog box showing where the software came from. You MUST be vigilant! No software can replace your Vigilance in checking where software came from, and that it is exactly what you intended to install.

The most common malware and adware vector is phony Flash Player updates. Legitimate Flash Player comes from adobe, from sites such as get.adobe.com/flashplayer.
