I have received an e-mail informing me that my phone has been hacked

I have received an e-mail informing me that my phone has been hacked and that they have access to my contacts. They are threatening to release images that they got whilst they took charge of my camera and forward it to all my contacts. I have to pay up in Bitcoin or they will release the images.

Is this a hoax or is it possible to hack the iPhone.
