Managing Movies in their folder

Knowing where iTunes keeps my own movies when I upload them to my iPad from my Mac, does that mean that I can delete and add them there to manage the content on my iPad?

I can remove download on the iPad but that never really seems to delete the movie altogether.

I keep my own movies on my own drive and import them when I want to see them on my iPad. I think this is making a duplicate of the file and filling up my disc space.

Your purchased content should be available to stream or download to your device. If you remove the download that should reclaim the used space while retaining the streaming link. Content that you sync to the device with iTunes will take up space on the device until you remove it. Depending on exactly where the file in question is and your options in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced adding a file to the library may create an additional copy inside the iTunes Media folder. If space is an issue you can either move the library to a larger drive as a unit (best policy), or change your options so that iTunes can refer to the item on its original path without making a copy (makes moving and backing up the library more complicated).
