Updated both iPhone and Macbook Pro to latest operating systems, now Phone will not sync as another update is required.
Error message: "Can’t install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
So now what?

I had exactly the same issue, resolved right now !
Just be sure date and time preferences in both your macbook/imac and iphone/ipad are synched.

Well, it turned out to be the USB/Lightning cable, which still works for charging.

Unfortunately, "latest operating system" does not tell us anything.
If your MacBook Pro is old, the "latest operating system" it can use is not sufficient to interact with an iOS 12 device.
So we need specific names and numbers.
What is the version number of your operating system?
What is the version number of iTunes?
What is the version number of iOS?
What is the model name and number of the iPhone?
I'm having the same issue. I have a MacBook Pro (Late 2013) and my iPhone won't sync with iTunes any longer. I have tried several USB cables. I have tried signing out and back into iTunes and iCloud. I have tried every suggestion I could find on what has solved the issue... and have not had success. Any other suggestions?
