Can someone explain to me how my Macbook suddenly got a cracked screen?

I bought this sealed and new 3 months ago. I'm always careful with my devices and never had problems with them. How lucky am i that I broke something that's the most expensive and something I take care of the most. I'm also lucky that I have no idea how this happened too.

This just happened when I opened it after it was just fine an hour ago. I already took this to the service center and they said theres a crack and I might pay around $700 for the new screen. I might have closed it and there was something that smashed at the screen. That's impossible since wouldn't I hear and notice that something blocked it and considering how bad that damage, I should notice it! Or even see the object that obstructed it when I opened the laptop.

I just really have to cry at this point because I cant afford to buy the replacement screen. So the $1200 I spent 3 months ago (that i still havent paid in full yet) was just thrown in the trash.

2 options. One would be the Ebay route or you can try and find an authorized Apple repair center that replaces screens affordably. Many 3rd party repair centers charge less than Apple. Someone else may have another option for you but replacing the screen yourself may be the most affordable.

Yes, you're still under warranty for the rest of the computer and that can be voided if you perform services on the MacBook yourself and something goes wrong.

Sorry this has happened to you. I would be pretty devastated. I will say that in the 20 years of me buying Macs (including my 2018 MBP) I have never encountered a cracked screen.

Well Apple has definitely extended a goodwill policy to some customers. They have performed out-of-warranty repairs free of charge. Early last year there was a shortage of batteries for the 2012-2013 MBP's so Apple created a short-term program and offered the battery replacement for free if customers were willing to wait the 2-3 months it would take to get more batteries. At the same time, for those customers who couldn't wait, Apple would charge them only the $199 battery replacement cost and swapped them for a brand new 2016 or 2017 MBP. So people who had old 2012 MacBook Pros got a brand new latest machine for only $199. Of course that program ended much earlier because stupid MacRumors felt the need to fully broadcast it and people were buying old 2012 MacBook Pros on Ebay trying to get away with scamming Apple's goodwill policy.

It's always worth a try calling AppleCare and explaining your issue. What I would recommend is to remain calm, don't accuse Apple of making the MacBook Pro's too fragile. Don't remind them how expensive their computers are or how much money you've spent over the years with them, and don't try to refute any responsibility. They may take care of you. Please keep us updated.

I really would hope they make an exception for me considering I just bought this 3 months ago. I'm just really praying everything going to be fine because I really can't take handle all these problems right now. Not to sound dramatic but it's true.

Also, I googled a 3rd party service repair shop. It had amazing reviews and they charge only 400$ for the whole screen. This relieved me a bit. But also still thinking if this would be a good idea long-term.

I'm not accusing anyone. I don't think this is Apple's fault of course. I always thought their devices are expensive but theyre worth it. Im sure theres a reason why this happened to me.

Thank you for the advice and I will keep you guys posted.

Cant take a photo anymore since its in the shop. They still hasnt updated me about the diagnosis. They said igts 1-2 days.

Anyway, if its an external damage, you would feel a scratch on your finger when you feel that crack part... But no.. theres no scratch feeling to it.

Im thinking since its an old model and it has been sealed for years, maybe the screen got mad since its just in the box. lol

Fixing it myself is out of the option. I just called a different shop and its the same price since they will order the screen from apple. Im sure there are other shops too but it wouldnt make sense if they charge a lower price to replace the screen.

Unless there are ways to fix this that doesnt require replacing the whole screen? (thats just wishful thinking but i just wanna say it)

It really is devastating. Not to sound dramatic but im also going through something and this happened. NEVER in my life have i damaged my devices like this. And it couldnt even wait until i exhausted the laptop.

Forgot to mention that the staff told me apple might cover the repair cost if I talk to them directly cause that happened to them before. Im not sure if she just said it to make me feel good cause I was about to cry when i was talking to her.
