Cannot update apps on Mac

The error message I get is this "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled." Neither of these are true. I want to update the laptop apps and it is getting confused by the mobile apps.

Help!

Ah, that problem.

If you installed those when you were running the original "shipped in the box" version of MacOS, or they were pre-loaded, they were never tagged with your Apple-ID. So you can't update the version you have and the error message is correct.

Luckily, they are free, so you can "Buy" the new version (for $0 ) any time you like. Go to the "featured" page or enter the name in the search box, and "Get" the new version.

Thanks Grant! I had to delete those 5 preinstalled apps (GarageBand, Pages, iMovie, numbers and keynote) and reinstalled them. Not sure who to report this to so this is fixed. Frustrating that preinstalled apps won't update on a new computer under the Apple ID you are required to use when it comes out of the box. But I hope I solved the problem at least for me, ha.

That is not likely to be correct.

Interference between Mac Apps and iDevice Apps has never been reported here previously. In general, most iDevice Apps are not available for the Mac under the same name, so conflicts do not occur.

The mist common problem is that someone used a different Apple-ID for the original purchase.

What Apps are we talking about in this case?

Apps that won't update on my MacBook Pro are: GarageBand, pages, numbers, keynote and iMovie. All were preloaded on the MacBook Pro (as well as the iPad and iPhone) Yet when I go to update them on my matchbook, they give me that error message mentioned above. They don't need to be updated on my phone or iPad. So I have no idea what they heck is going on. This is the second Mackbook where I've had this problem. Sent the last one back because they couldn't figure out what was going on ( I also couldn't sign in to the app store on the last one.)

The standard on the Mac is that any new version of any Application should take be able to deal with any or all of its pre-existing versions, even if they are damaged.

Any Application that does not meet this standard will get publicly shamed for not meeting the expectations of users.

So, no, in general, you do not need to remove the old version... and certainly not for Apple-issued Applications.

Is there occasionally a problem? Well yes, but it is treated as a bug and rapidly fixed.
