32 bit to 64 bit transition
I only have three apps that will need to be updated. Does this happen automatically or do I need to contact the developers?

You need to contact the developer's of those apps.
If they don't plan on updating them, you'll have to find alternatives or don't upgrade the OS to the next version after Mojave.
