Yes your Samsung is the correct form factor you need— 2.5" 6G SSD.

If you replace the HD, highly recommended to replace the SATA lll at the same time to avoid issues.

Samsung was once the "gold standard" for SSD conversions but that reputation has slipped over the last couple of years. Also their tech support is slow and not helpful.

I went Bob's path, upgrading my mid 2012 13-inch MBP to a 500GB SSD about 15 months ago. I used this "kit" which includes a simple external drive that makes moving the contents from old to new very easy and accurate:

I used Carbon Copy Cloner (https://bombich.com) to clone the entire old drive to the SSD. No issues at all.

A couple of notes:

  • Replace the hard drive cable at the same time you upgrade the drive. In the 13-inch model that cable is prone to wear from vibration of use and normal transport and a worn cable can mimic this symptoms of a failing hard drive.
  • Whichever drive you decide to use, make sure it it rated at SATA3 (6GBps) speed to take full advantage of that MBP's drive bus speed.

An idea of the change before and after on mine: The app that took longest to book with the original roto-drive was Photoshop Elements. With the original drive it took 15-18 seconds to be ready for use. Now it take 2-3 seconds. Nice!

Changing the drive and cable are very easy on this model. I used instructions o this page:

I'm about to dive into this pool myself. The MBP I'm upgrading:

13 in, mid-2012

2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

10.13.6 (High Sierra)

About to push the button on:

DIY KIT: OWC Express USB 3.0/2.0 2.5" Enclosure + 480GB Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD

16.0GB (2x 8GB) PC3-12800 DDR3L 1600MHz SO-DIMM 204 Pin CL11 Memory Upgrade Kit

Apple Hard Drive / SSD Cable For 13-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) main drive bay

I contacted OWC to make sure that if I upgrade to Mojave there won't be issues with my new SSD/RAM. The rep told me:

"Mojave looks for the factory drive during the install process so it may not install if it sees a 3rd party drive. For this reason we recommend that you upgrade to Mojave on your current drive first. Then you can install the new SSD and copy it over later. Our recommended transfer steps can be found at the link below. The ram can be installed at any time so you can install it before or after you set up the new SSD. The only issue is with the install process looking for the factory SSD. Otherwise that OS runs fine on any OWC SSD. If you have any questions feel free to contact me again. Thank you and have a great day!"

I'd be lying if I said I weren't crazy nervous, but I really appreciate this forum, and Allan Jones' input in particular, especially on the HD/SSD cable. So, thank you Allan!

My question is basically making sure I've got the rundown correct:

1) Install/upgrade to Mojave on my current HD

2) Create a TimeMachine backup of my current HD/OS to my G Drive external HD

3) Create a Carbon Copy Clone on G Drive

4) Follow instructions from OWC

5) Clone entire old HD to new SSD

6) Enjoy speedy MacLife

Anyone please feel free to correct me before I get rolling. Thanks again!
