I have been unable to connect my phone to my mac to get all my music. The FAQ on Apples site has been useless, and when I chatted with support, it lead nowhere. I keep getting this error: A Software update is required to conned to your iPhone. Can anyone help me figure out how to get this fixed?

Actually, I just disconnected my lightning cable from USB port, restarted MacBook, plugged cable back in and the software update message did not pop up! I tested it again several times on both ports and NO software update message. Plus, my phone is charging at warp speed now that the pop-up doesn't interfere with the connection. Thanks
For iOS 12 you need iTunes 12.8.0.150 or better running on OS X 10.11.4 or better. See How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support if required.
Assuming a suitable version of iTunes is in place then in Finder use the menu item Go > Go to Folder..., copy the following text, paste it into the dialog box and press enter:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resources
Unlock your device and connect it to USB. Double click on MobileDeviceUpdater in the folder that has opened. It should notify you of a software update. Install it and iTunes should hopefully recognize your device.

Thanks for posting this, it worked! The installation of the software update still failed but iTunes and Photos finally recognize my iPhone X for the first time in months and I can actually charge my phone again using my MacBook. I hope other users with this same issue see this post because Apple support obviously has no clue on how to fix the problem. Thanks again
