how to transfer pictures from Mac to a flash drive/

If you are using Apple's Photos program the easiest way is to launch Photos, command click on the photos you want to transfer, and then from the File menu select Export. You'll be shown a dialog where you can select the file type (probably want to leave it as is) and the size. Click on okay to continue. A file selector will appear which you can use to navigate to the flash drive. Save.
