I have a digital Onkyo receiver that I can connect my iPhone to and listen to Pandora, etc.
i also have a newer iPad that has BT capability but won’t connect to the receiver like the iPhone and wish that I knew what to do. I have a 7 Plus phone and an iOS 12 ipad.

Make sure Bluetooth as off on all your other devices, but the iPad.
Then, turn off/on Bluetooth on iPad and try to re-pair the iPad and audio receiver.

It's likely because you have your iPhone on and nearby when you're trying to connect your iPad. Turn your phone off or turn Bluetooth on your phone off, then pair the iPad with your receiver.
