like i cant even get the notifications when people in the group start a call, and they are calling but i cant even see that. and the icon for facetime in the group chat is gray.

I see that you're unable to use the Group FaceTime feature on your iOS device. The setting is grayed out, and I'm happy to help.
Use Group FaceTime on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch -- Make sure your iOS device is updated to iOS 12.1.4.
"To use Group FaceTime video calls, you need an iPhone 6s or later, iPad Pro or later, iPad Air 2, or iPad Mini 4 with iOS 12.1.4. Earlier models of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch that support iOS 12.1.4 can join Group FaceTime calls as audio participants."
Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 12 or later device or Apple Watch -- If your device was already up-to-date, delete then restore the FaceTime application, and see if the issue's resolved.
