How to download apps on a new Mac?

I got a new MacBook Air and it is my first trying to download things from the App Store on a Mac. When I push on Get and Install it isn't installing but loading for a such a long time. nothing is installing on my Mac. I tried updating some apps with my Apple ID I used for my iPhone but it isn't working, it is only loading and doing nothing else. I am trying to install Word, Powerpoint, Excel and WhatsApp but it isn't working at all. For any of the apps I am trying to download and install it doesn't work? What should I do?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.
