IOS 12 and Battery Failure

why did my battery fail in my ipad mini the day I installed ios 12?

The battery drained overnight and now I only see a dead battery on the screen with a red bar at the bottom indicating it is empty. If I plug in the power cable it never charges, if I then unplug it, I get a symbol on the screen indicating a lightning cable should be plugged in. I tried several different cables and charger combinations to no avail. Do I need to factory reboot this thing? I will never update the ios again. This is frustrating, and not what I expected from Apple at all.

Thanks much. Power and Home button simultaneously only alternates between black screen and dead battery graphic. Tried it many times. I will take it to the nearest Apple store for the verdict. I know, lot of people say this about everything that fails - it was OK yesterday. Yeah, because it failed today, not yesterday. It is entirely possible that it was simply coincidental with the iOS update. Thanks again.

That is an iPad Mini 2.

That iPad Mini is a 5-1/2 year old model.

You could try a hard reset of your iPad Mini by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons and see if that revives your iPad Mini, or not.

It is possible/coincidence that your iPad Mini’s battery just picked that particular time to fail.

iOS upgrades/updates do not, usually, cause any type of hardware failures.

Bring your iPad Mini into your nearest, “local” Apple Store for diagnosis, evaluation and potential options.

IF Apple Store employees determines your iPad battery failed, an out of warranty battery replacement, for an iPad, is $99 U.S.D., plus tax.

To expedite customer service, at Apple’s/Apple Store’s own discretion, they may, or may NOT, offer you a replacement, refurbished iPad, of your same model, as an option, for the $99 battery replacement fee.

The refurbished iPad is not a guarantee, but on a store to store basis.

Best of Luck to You!
