my iPhone xs max goes quiet when I'm having a conversation yet the call remains active. The person Im talking to will not hear me neither can I hear the person when that happens. What could be the problem and how do I get it sorted ?

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities, its great to have you here. If I understand your post correctly, while on a call its hard to hear the person on the other end and that person has a hard time hearing you as well.
I have two helpful articles called If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound isn't clear on your iPhone and If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker that has some troubleshooting steps to take that may resolve your issue.
