Need help with Photos and Referenced files

I'm a newbie and want to use Photos with referenced external files but the process does not seen straightforward. I did uncheck to box in Preferences that would allow files to be copied into the Photos library. Rather than risk the thousands of photos and videos accumulated since 2001, I decided to use just one fine to test it.

I "imported" one file. Then tried it again to make sure I couldn't import duplicates, but Photos allowed a duplicate to be imported. I tried it again and it allowed a second duplicate. And there is no evidence, such as a badge that denotes that is a referenced file.

Am I not doing it right? Is there no way to look at an image and confirm that it's referenced?

Thanks guys! I found the box the check in the Metadata drop down list, and also played around with the duplicates issue and figured out how Photos reacts in different scenarios. Thanks to Old Toad for the link to an explanation of the disadvantages of using a referenced library.

The reasons why I've wanted to keep the originals external to the software app is that it's very simple. And I don't care to use the cloud. I've also heard many horror stories about not being able to get their precious photos out of an internal software-specific library such as iPhoto, Photos, etc.. I don't know a good option, other than Lightroom (at least the old Lightroom before it was converted to a cloud-based system) that will work well with referenced files - and that's a subscription model that I don't want.

Do any of you know a good non-cloud, non-subscription program that works well with referenced files.

That have been horror stories. You can always get the originals out of any of Apple's photo libraries. As long as Photos is installed and working, you can open the library in Photos and use the command "File > Export > Export unmodified original" to save the originals in folders outside the photos Library. And if Photos should not be able to open the library, ctrl-click the Photos Library and copy the Masters folder out of the library bundle. It is organized in subfolders according two the year, month, day of of the import session of the photos.

if you want to use a referenced library, make it easy for yourself to keep track of the originals, since you will be responsible to find them. Keep them well organized in one place, and in subfolders, that you can easily recognize based on the date and location, when you took the photo. You may want to write the path to the referenced file into the Info for a photo.

Good, of course, is specific to your own needs and requirements. CaptureOne, OnOnePhoto Raw, PhotoSupreme are all non-subscription, and work with referenced files. Thing is, certainly in the case of the first two, that using a subscription model is about the same price per annum as keeping them up-to-date.
