Cannot get my iPod into "disc mode". Can I still connect

I have the instructions to retrieve my music library from my iPod Classic. However, it w/not go into "disc mode". Can I still connect my iPod to my computer & continue w/the instructions even if it's not in "disc mode"?

See How to use disk mode on your iPod - Apple Support to make sure that you're using the correct steps. Your device really should respond if it is meant to support disk mode, however as long contents of the drive are displayed in your file system you will be able to access the contents even if the device hasn't strictly switched into disk mode.
