Can't add top sites on Safari

I lost all my top sites after being on the phone with apple support to get rid of automatic redirect from Google to bing. They solved the problem but I lost all my stop sites. I have been trying to restore them. Some sites seem to work and others just won't transfer to top sites. I have used the + button in the URL frame. I have looked it up and followed various directions. what should I do. Maybe this is connected--I am no longer getting sites that I had previously visited pop up on the search bar when I put in the first few letters or words.

Delete TopSites.plist,  if  it is accessible  in the version of Safari installed on your Mac.

Activate Finder by clicking on an empty spot on the Desktop.

        Hold the “Option” key down

Click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar and choose Library from the dropdown.

Click open Safari folder. Scroll down the list.

Right click on the TopSites.plist and choose "Move to Trash"

Close the window and restart the Mac. Test.
