Zip Files on the Cloud

Why did Apple have to mess, yet again, with the download of multiple images/videos from icloud by putting them in a zip file? This makes it more cumbersome to have to transfer those files from a zip file to the destination folder.

Does iCloud storage delete my original files after backing them up?
