as a electronics tech-how to determine if repaired ipad is stolen and how to return to rightul owner

REpaired a ipad for a individual who has numerous health issues, once operational, discovered it was in the state of activation lock, Instructed the client to contact seller, seller had removed all traces of social media, which is how he sold the item, I can tell that it appears to be stolen, or kept in a safety deposit box regardless if it is stolen i want the rightful owner to have it returned as the client is unable to work and i have donated one of the trillion extra devices that i know are legitimate in origin. Im not much on helping anyone without proof of ownership, but this lady who on top of chemotheraphy i felt did not need to be stressed by this issue. is there a way to honestly determine if the device is actually who says it is, as i would be hard pressed not to return it to the rightful owner its only another one of thousands seeminly extra devices i do not care to posses for no good reason. that is the bad part of moving to oklahoma from the silicon valley, devices migrate to your house without desire. its just simple ttl electronics, not like its rocket science, anyway would love to return pad to owner or i guess flash a custom build if no other avenue of redress. Thanks

It’s terrifi of you to want to return the iPad to the rightful owner. Unfortunately, there is no way to find the owner and Apple won’t help or get involved in lost or stolen devices. The only thing to do is to turn it over to the local authorities.

Again, good on you for wanting to the right thing.

The local authorities u...mm do not want me to bring anything concerning digital electronics to their attention. As sad as it is to state lets just say there is absolutely not more than 1 person who knows what a G.I.A.C. certification has to do with anything, I lost them all somewhere between memory forensics, and proper methods incident and or intrusion detection/prevention. The honestly think that when i mention man in the middle exploits that is a symptom from my ADHD. and have just about lost hope in any proper digital regulatory agency existing with cattle and pipelines.

ULTRA SAD FACE OK ON THE ENVIROMENTAL aspect, 90% of unclamed stolen or lost goods are headed straight to landfill here, that is not flying with me, so no way of even knowing if it needs to become a "add binary or machine coded custom build" tablet or returned to owner, ok i am pretty sure apple by mere assumption on cultural background probally would not want ewaste that is unwarranted on their hands. i didn't sign on for an account to brag about repurposing apple devices but not gonna contribute to ewaste, sorry its a loose loose ending to trying to do the responsible thing. UGHH

nothing local here except a couple box consumer goods retailers, i'm pretty firm on not driving 80 plus miles to recycle an item when i have all of the needed devices, former education and like 30 years experience with "Ethical Hacking and security hardening as a full time hobby". I love the rebranding of english jargon. I'll turn it into a educational device and donate it to the local habitat for humanity before driving that distance. nope I can't go for that, No can do. Thanks for the ecofriendly,,no after emissions from the drive to the recycling location probally not that ecofriendly. I hate going on youtube to find some gray area solution to what should be a pass or fail request.
