Android phone hotspot to iMac

I connect an Android 7 phone to a 2018 iMac running 10.13.6 via Hotspot with the Automatically Join setting on. It used to auto connect for a while after a Shut Down and connected less after a restart (earlier versions of 10.13). Now it only does it once before I have to always select the network name from a list.

My wife has the same make & type of phone and connects via hotspot with a different name, but not at the same time. We have no landline. Same problem.

After many discussions with Apple, they state that this is so you don't accidentally connect and use your data allocation without knowing it. Could someone either confirm this or otherwise, because I don't believe it.

I would especially love to hear from anyone using a similar set-up and if it auto connects or the same as me.

Thanking you in anticipation.

My phone uses Android 7. It used to work for a number of times when my computer's software was 10.12 and 10.13. It would connect automatically for something like 6+ times and then NO. Restart would make a few times and a Shut Down would reset it to the 6+ times with no problem. Suddenly, after a software upgrade, it stopped working and with the WiFi Off and On working perfectly highly suggests to me that the phone is ok (same phone used through out), it's the Apple computer.

I must investigate at what OS version it happened. It will take a Loooonnnnggg time if I find a way to see which OS was used when.

OK have now done some testing.

Turning wifi off and on a few hours later doesn't auto connect; it's the same as selecting my network from the list.

However, your way requires two click and it connects immediately. Selecting from the list also takes two clicks, if the network in actually showing; my wife's network may still be there.

I really don't know what Apple is playing at because as it works with your method, it should work all the time, automatically.

Thanks for your help.

I've now upgraded to 10.14.3, based on a specialist suggestion. It still doesn't work.

I've been told by an Apple specialist that the engineers said that what's happing is what it should do, even though I've said it used to work. I've even received an email that he was going to contact the phone maker and then he said it was up to me!!!!!!!

Quite frankly, Apple doesn't give a f'in stuff about Its customers.

I now expect them to withdraw all support unless you only use their products. What a crap company.

DO NOT BUY APPLE. Next time I'm buying Microsoft.

What do you think?

I think you should buy whatever you want to buy. I use Apple products, Android devices, and Windows computers and I do not have the issues you appear to have. When I want to use my android device as a hotspot I do so without issue regardless what device I am connecting to it. Maybe it is a case of PBCK. Best of luck with your Microsoft products. They work fine for me just as do my Apple products.

What Android and OS versions are you using?

I made a small mistake in my original posting; the computer was bought in 2017. It came with 10.12 which I had to download a number of times due to the problems I had. Then 10.13 to try to solve them. Problem after problem after problem and after many, many hours on the phone, Apple still wouldn't swap the computer. It's been to a service centre twice and had the WiFi & Bluetooth card swapped, that is if I believe it actually did happen and still the Wifi doesn't auto connect. 15 months of problems and it causing me a problem in that it doesn't work as to what a customer would expect.

To answer your question, I now have to Turn WiFi Off and then Turn WiFi On to connect. It is NOT automatic.
