Never seen anything like that.
Wouldn't hurt to reset the FCP X Preferences.
Hold Option-Command as you launch FCP X.

Didn't work. I haven't seen it since on the Hue/Sat-curves toggle box, but it still comes up (but not right away) on the Preferences panel.
I found out what this is. If you tab around you eventually get to a box and it gives it this appearance. Then you can toggle the box on and off with the spacebar! Mystery solved.
Yes, but it usually takes a lot of tabbing, as there are so many tab points!
