Your internal drive must ALWAYS have a minimum of 10-15% of the HD's size always available. If yours does not then you can freeze your system!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Move large libraries (Photos, music & movies) to external HD's.

Try this: restart in Safe Mode (restart and hold the shift key until the Apple icon appears.) Once Finder loads try emptying the trash.
