Yes. Absolutely. If you cleared the history and deleted the cookies, then the cookies dropped on your Mac by sites you log into are gone.
Well, if the cookies are gone, the cookies are gone. How else is the host going to identify your browser? It is NOT by IP address. IP addresses are not static for the vast majority of machines out there.
So I guess login details are associated with an IP address(?) And my logging in is being flagged up as a new device using my login details - when it isn't.
Malware scan shows nothing, could it be problem with OS update? Not sure if I signed in to a website between updating and first problem.
What do you mean they are "not recognizing" your Mac?
could that be caused by simply clearing browsing history?
I asked support that but didn't get straight answer

Apple support still claiming this shouldn't be the problem...
If the website sees your browser as one that hasn't been used on that site yet, it's most likely due to an update that changed the version number, etc. or the cookies stored by that site on your machine were deleted or expired.
