Iphoto 9.6.1 not loading files from SD card

I can see my SD card on finder and access the files. Unfortunately iPhoto 9.6.1 just sits there "loading" nothing. At times it comes up with a ridiculous file count of 10000 or so but will not load either. This also has not been consistent. In the past it magically worked for a while and now it does not. Rebooted, and unplugged with no joy.

Earlier versions gave me prompt to delete files off the SD Card, now it does not. So I reformat the card in my sony camera every time.

iMac 27", macOS 10.14

Can you copy the files to the desktop and import from there?

 So I reformat the card in my sony camera every time.

This is the best way to work.

Yes I can import from finder to iPhoto. Thanks Terence for the work around.

If anyone knows how to get iPhoto working so it will load from my sd card I would still be interested to know.
