find tags on server

I am trying to use tags on a network server. The problem is that when I search for tagged files located on the server, using the navigation buttons on the left side under "Tags" I get no results.

My current work-around is to search for the Tag using the Spotlight search located at the upper right of an open finder window.

This only works when at least one locally saved file is tagged with the Tag I am searching for on the server. If this is the case, then the search query dropdown will offer to search for the query as "Tags" in a dropdown menu. Selecting the query offered as "Tags" results in a special TAG query in the search field.

Then I need to chose "Network" from the Search: locations on the left edge of the header under the search field.

Is there a better way to do this?

I'm using Mojave 10.14.3

In Finder Preferences, I have the following settings:

  • Advanced : When performing a search: Search the Current Folder

The Spotlight search from an open Finder window's search input only searches the current folder and the rest of the booted Mac drive for tags matching the criteria — but not tagged files on shares from connected servers. The resulting Search panel may show, left to right, This Mac "username" Shared, but clicking on that Shared title gives one a blank Finder window without a match of the known tag on the mounted share.

The mounted share that I was testing for the Finder tag search was served from a Synology DiskStation via AFP-over-TCP/IP. Tagged files appear there in the Finder, but not from a tag search. Even when I open that mounted share and see the tagged file in the Finder, entering a tag:green search shows all green tagged entities but the file on that mounted share.

The above behavior was observed in High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G5019) and Mojave 10.14.3 (18D109).
