iPod Classic will not sync with iTunes

I have over 10,000 songs on my classic and have always been able to sync new downloaded music. Now, I cannot sync anything. I connect device but nothing happens. I downloaded latest version of iTunes and have a new PC. How can I restore my ability to sync several new pieces of music from my PC?
