Facebook Chat on iChat

I just recently found out that you were able to connect your facebook account with iChat, and have been attempting to set it up on my computer that runs Tiger. Every time I try to login through jabber, it simply says "Could not connect to Jabber". However, I am able to login on other computers with Leopard.
I've been following the basic steps and am sure that the port, username, and server are correct, and I've unchecked the SSL box.
I'm fairly sure that my issue is that I'm trying to login with Tiger. So, my question is, is there anything I can do differently to connect to facebook while still using Tiger?

Hi,

Welcome to the  Discussions

If you look at these Google Instructions as an example you will see that Tiger takes the Server name to be the end of the User Name (second and third big pics) and that you have to change it manually in the iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings tab.

In the example the user name is john.smith@gmail.com
iChat 3 presumes the gmail.com bit is the server name (it is for most Jabber servers). (Googletalk users have to manually change it to talk.google.com)

You may have to check and alter manually the server name for the Facebook server.

Hi,

Item 4 in th Defcom's Pic is directly related to the iChat 5 set up.

iChat 4 and iChat 3 users have to do the Done bit and then go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server setting fro the Jabber account they just set up to check the Server name or IP and Port number.

Other than that the Instructions are the same.

I'm on snow leopard and I can't login to facebook chat on iChat either.

You may need to go into Keychain Access and delete any references to chat.facebook.com you've had in the past. I was unable to connect too. I deleted the account in iChat. Deleted any references in my Keychain. Then recreated the account according to the info here. It logged in and created the correct Keychain entry.

I've tried literally everything at least ten times yesterday and it didn't work (don't tell me to check my username or something I did everything correctly; plus changed my pw to and back, deleted keychain, etc) for a while. All of a sudden I come back to my computer and it works for the rest of the night. Not surprisingly this morning it didn't work and still hasn't. Is it snow leopard? ichat 5? The fact that I downloaded chax before creating the fbook chat account? This is really ******* me off...

Hi,

AS I have said Previously I don't have a Facebook Account so I cannot check the finer Details.

I have not heard Defcom say that the Facebook server goes down from time to time (but there again th AIM one does as does the Google one now and then).

I have an AIM account, an @Mac.com Account, two Jabber accounts plus a GoogleTalk Buddy list and have no issue with these. (Other than mentioned, that now and then a server will go down).

I would favour the Facebook server as likely first cause, as the service is relatively new and they may not have projected the update adequately.

I have tried every thing too! Nothing works anymore, I am using chax, will disable it now. But this all worked with chax enabled and 10.6.4, now I have 10.6.5 would periodically drop the connection, but now I can't login at all, says incorrect username or password, And I know it's correct! The other thing I did was change my username with facebook. Did you get this working?

hi everyone,

i have tried all the troubleshooting suggestions I could find. it is not my firewall, i reset my facebook password, don't have any software updates, and am sure i'm using the correct login information for port/username, etc. to login to facebook via ichat but it still won't work!

i currently use jabber to link my gchat to ichat so that has been working fine.

would love any help!

I had this same problem, using iChat 5.0.3 on Snow Leopard, with Chax installed. I changed two things at once, not sure which fixed it.

Change #1: deleted the (non-working) account from iChat, shut down iChat, deleted entry for that account from KeyChain Access, then restarted iChat

Change #2: when re-creating the account, I used an all-lowercase version of my Facebook username. On Facebook it has caps in it (e.g. MyUserName) but I entered it as myusername@chat.facebook.com

As I say, don't know which change made the difference, but it works now.
