I can't make changes because the admin user id is not known, thought it was the same I used in logging into the computer, but, its not working, I guess I must have tampered with something

Did you attempt to change the name on your account? Doing it incorrectly will remove admin privileges from the account.
If that is your only account, you will need to create a new admin user which you can use to restore admin capability to your other account.

I can log in as a user but I dint know my admin user name, so I can make changes meant for admin
