Offline maps Google Maps iphone

I have downloaded a map for offline access on iphone XR, ios 12.1.4, but I cannot open the map. I have read dozens of blogs and search entries, none of which address the specific issue of how to open the map once its been downloaded

Google maps works when you offline. And you have no internet or data connection. You just use it normal when your in that area.

Download areas and navigate offline

If you're going where the Internet is slow, mobile data is expensive, or you can't get online, you can save an area from Google Maps to your phone or tablet and use it when you're offline.

Note: Downloading offline maps isn't available in some regions because of contractual limitations, language support, address formats, or other reasons.

iPhone & iPad Android

Download a map to use offline

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app .
  2. Make sure you're connected to the Internet and signed in to Google Maps.
  3. Search for a place, like San Francisco.
  4. At the bottom, tap the name or address of the place  tap More .
  5. Select Download offline map  Download.

Use offline maps

After you download a map, use the Google Maps app just like you normally would. If your Internet connection is slow or absent, Google Maps will use your offline maps to give you directions.

Note: You can get driving directions offline, but not transit, bicycling, or walking directions. In your driving directions, you won't have traffic info, alternate routes, or lane guidance.

The Google Maps link states "You can select your own map to download or view maps you've already downloaded." Except that I can't view the map that is on this list; the only choices that I am presented with is Delete or Update. I want to use the map that I have saved. This is not working like the rest of the Google Map menu works. I am really missing something here...
