Sometimes I’m literally standing for 20 mins and the stand number doesn’t move. What the deal??

The accelerometer in your Apple Watch does not know if you are vertical or horizontal or somewhere in between. The accelerometer only knows if you are moving your arm.

You can lie in bed and wave your arm around and get standing credit. You can sit in an airplane and have turbulence give you credit for standing and moving.

The Apple Watch just sees that the accelerometer is reporting, so if you do not move your arm sufficiently to make the Apple Watch think you are up and walking around, then it is not going to give you credit.

If that is not the issue, then follow julieda's advice.
