Hi,
i'm trying to combine two videos taken in portrait mode into a single split-screen. When i create the overlay split screen, I get these black bars on both sides of each video. Is there anyway to zoom into the video or move the videos side by side so there is no black bar in between them?

There is no function in iMovie that would remove the black space.
You might try this: As a workaround you can create a new project and place Clip #1 as a Picture in Picture onto a black background. Adjust its position so that its right edge is in the middle of the preview screen. Then share it out as Clip #1. Do the same with Clip #2, in a new project, only position its left edge in the middle of the preview screen and share it out as Clip #2. Then place the shared clips #1 and #2 onto your main project and do a split screen with them. I think that that will eliminate the black space. You might have to do a couple of do-overs until it fits correctly.
