How can I determine which external USB/bluetooth keyboards I can use w- my mid-2012 MacBook Pro?

Does it have to be an 'Apple' keyboard?

If not, are there still requirements that make it Apple-compatible?

Or are plug-in (USB/Bluetooth) keyboards now a generic accessory with no compatibility requirements?
