What’s the fast way to transfer files between old iMac and brand new one?

if you are referring to data and not programs then I'd use a thunderbolt external which has an SSD or a fast flash drive such as the Sandisk extreme or Lexar P20
FWIW, you should be aware that not all programs you have on your old Mac will run on the new Mac.
Most of the apps are pretty new so I hope they all work. I finally connected the two iMacs and the transfer is going; but will take about 8 hours. Thanks again.
Thanks for your reply. I should have been more specific. I just got a new 27" iMac. I wanted to transfer EVERYTHING from my OLD 2010 iMac to the new one, including programs. After doing some more research on this I found I can't use target disk mode because of cable incompatabilities. I do have a Time Machine backup that could use USB 3 and apparently you can use bluetooth (since the instructions say to put the two computers near each other to transfer files. So I guess the real questions is which is after USB 3 from an external Hard Drive or Bluetooth?
You're welcome.
