Deciding a file system for my EXTERNAL HDD.

I have a Mac with SSD, but have a 512GB external Hard Disk Drive. I have read that APFS is not for HDDs... Should I still proceed with APFS or format the HDD with HFS(+). As HDDs are slower than SDD, I am looking for a file system which will let me use the external drive without any problems. What should I do?

APFS support for external harddrives? Hi, I have a macbook air, M1, 2020. I use a 5tb external harddrive, USB3.0, connected by a USBC to USB adapter for backups. And by backups I mean just copying files from my main internal SSD to the external harddrive. My question is, If I format my external harddrive for APFS, will it work just as well as it did for HFS pluss, Mac oS extended, or would it even work at all? I've heard on other websights that APFS is not a good filesystem for external harddrives, is that true or will it work? My concern is that in a future Mac oS update Apple will drop support for Mac oS extended and that I will be forced to use online backup Solutions to backup my files, I find backing up my files to external harddrives more convenient and a more cheeper alternitive to Online backup services. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

APFS or HFS+ for HDD Hi, I just bought a WD Elements 5TB HDD, and I was wondering what was the best file system to format it with. I read that APFS was recommended on SSD but still could be used on HDD, this thing sends me into confusion. Does this shorten the life of the HDD since APFS saves file system information randomly or are the benefits outweighing the risks?

If you plan on using it for Time Machine, it has to be HFS+. Otherwise, it doesn't matter other than APFS is somewhat new and may have issues that HFS+ doesn't have.
