If you can't find your Desktop and Documents folder you must have activated iCloud Drive even though you don't remember it.

Open the Finder Preferences and select the Sidebar tab. Make sure you've selected the 3 iCloud items. Open a Finder window and click on the appropriate icon to open your Documents folder or Desktop folder. You make, of course, turn off iCloud drive. If you do, make sure you select the option to Copy the documents to your hard drive or they'll be deleted.
