Change search engine on my Mac laptop from Bing to Google

Lately Bing comes up as my search engine. I do this: (but it doesn't work)

Open Safari.

Click the search bar.

Select Google as search engine

When I go back to my search bar it's still Bing.......what do I need to do to remove Bing?

There is adware installed on your Mac.

Please take all steps posted below.


 1. Use  the latest release of Malwarebytes for Mac to remove malware/adware installed on your Mac.

     Install guide:       https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-1817

     Uninstall Guide:  https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-1190

     The installer may ask you to allow it in Security & Privacy  /System Preference. Allow it.

     Click the “Scan Now” button.

     Repeat the scan please.

     Once done, quit Malwarebytes for Mac.

     Restart the computer, relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.


2. Additional steps to take, if necessary.

  1. Remove unknown profiles.

      System Preferences > Profiles

      Open System Preferences, click the “Profiles” icon ( a checkmark on a gear) .

      When Profiles pane opens, select the unknown profile and click the minus button at the bottom.

  3. Reset search engine:    https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/customize-your-search-ibrwe75c2a3c/mac

  4. Reset  Homepage.   https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/set-your-homepage-ibrw1020/mac

Shut down the computer from  menu. Press the power button to start the computer.

Launch Safari holding the shift key down.

Hi Christian,

Welcome to the community.

Recently adware/ malware have been creating problem for Safari users.

Malwarebytes for Mac or Etreheck will help removing these adware malware.

Hi,


Which OS and Safari versions are you using?

In the latest versions of Safari, you can change it in Safari -> Preferences (from the menu bar) -> Search -> Search Engine


Also, the latest versions of Safari have no dedicated "search bar", the URL bar works as a search bar. So I think you use an older version of Safari, that's why I'm asking which one.
