Two-factor authentication verification from a single device?

I currently have two-factor authentication enabled.

I've just signed in to my Apple ID on my MacBook Pro and was prompted to enter a verification code.

My issue is that the verification code was displayed on my MacBook Pro, however I was under the impression it would be displayed on my trusted device i.e. my iPhone.

Is this correct as it doesn't seem right to me?
