Target display mode for USB-C Macbook Pro > old iMac?

Hello, I'm trying to use a late 2013 iMac as an external display for my USB-C Macbook Pro.

I connected a USB-C Male to Mini DP Male cable, USB-C on laptop end, Mini DP on desktop end. It doesn't work.

Questions:

  • On desktop end, does it need to be "Thunderbolt"? (i.e. not just plain Mini DP)
  • I'm not sure if TB3 and USB-C specs are exactly the same. On laptop end, does it need to be "Thunderbolt 3"?
  • Would it work if I used a USB-C Male/Male cable, plus a USB-C > Thunderbolt 2 adapter? If such adapters exist.
  • Would it work if I used a Thunderbolt 2 cable, plus a TB2 > USB-c adapter? Again, if such adapters exist.

Thanks!
