Yes....it is technically possible to do so, and yes you can do it yourself, but you have to be very careful not to bend the "hard drive's" connector when you upgrade it. see attached web-link. As it is an SSD, and a certain special kind of SSD (solid state drive)

it will be very expensive, especially when it comes to the max capacity/size , as these things tend to be.

Some users have used this Sintech adopter

https://www.amazon.com/Sintech-Adapter-Upgrade-2013-2015-MacBook/dp/B01CWWAENG

together with a stand NVMe blade like the EVO 870

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-500GB-MZ-V7E500BW/dp/B07BN4NJ2J/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=nvme+ssds&qid=1552602035&s=electronics&sr=1-4

To use an NVMe drive you have to have updated the firmware which was incorporated into the full upgrade to High Sierra.

The EVO 870 works'

I would expect most others to work too.with the possible exception of the EVO 870 Plus

Mac Pro 5,1 - High Sierra - 970 EVO Plus … - Apple Community

The Plus does not work in the older Silver towe Mac Pros. I am using a Western Digitaal Black NVMe SSD in my 4.1>5.1 Silver tower with no problems. It is in a cheap PCie card.

I know of no list of ones that will work in the 2013 Mac Pro. Make sure you use a Sintech adapter.

I’d say go with what IIIaass wrote. He has more experience in this field than i do, which is almost none. The best advice i could give you would be to read and consider what other mac users have posted here, and to buy from a reputable company that stands behind its stuff 100% and gives you satisfaction or a full refund/return if you’re not. This is a bit of a grey area, as Apple hasn’t, as far as I or anyone else knows, published a list of blade type SSD’s supported/known to work/ or endorsed any makers/brand names/models/companies, etc. All i have is ‘yes, it’s technically possible’ and the experience of other people.
