Back up iPhone on Mac

I need to back up my iPhone on my Mac. But both of them have the same storage size - 128GB. It is obvious that I cannot back up on internal hard drive because I'll never have enough space to back up 128GB on 128GB drive.

Is there any way to make backup via iTunes on external drive?

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

That May sound reasonable, but it’s actually not true for several reasons.

You should always keep an absolute minimum of 10% (12.8 GB) free on the iPhone at all times.
Much of the iPhone’s content is not stored in a backup. Examples are iOS, all your applications’ code, and data you keep in iCloud.
