The volume for “*.JPG” cannot be found.

i start with a brand new lib file and all pictures are on same local drive, after i drag and drop the picture folders in Photos app as instructed. App scans the pictures nice and I get good representation in "photos" tab. But as soon as i click on any picture in there, i get "The volume for “xxxx.JPG” cannot be found. Connect the disk or mount the server volume needed, then try again."

Any idea what is going on?

What are the preferences in Photos for "Photos > Preferences > General":

Is the option "Importing > Copy items into the Photos Library" still enabled, as it should be?

If the "Copy items into the Photos Library" option is disabled, Photos will not create copies of the imported photos in the Photos Library, but is referencing them in the original location. In that case you need to keep the original files that you imported available, exactly where they have been when you added them to Photos. Connect the volume where you imported the photos from or insert the card from your camera, if you imported the photos from a card.
